To use to correct lingo, you want to go from a Compact Triple (50/39/30) to a Standard Double (53/39). You are correct with your assumption about needing a new crank and BB. You will likely need a new, longer chain, since you're putting a bigger chainring up front. Your FD should be fine and your shifters can be adjusted to work with the double ring.

If the 53/39 gearing lets you address all your needs, then it's a reasonable upgrade. Regarding "easier and more reliable", there are many opinions. Mine is that my triple shifts just as smoothly and reliably as my standard or compact double.
