I am looking to get a power meter and head unit and looking across online sales sites and ebay, I have the following options within my budget:
- Elite+ on Mavic Open Pro with Garmin 500 - brand new and with HR strap and cadence
- Pro+ on Mavic Open Pro with CycleOps head unit with HR strap - would need to buy a cadence/speed monitor - 6 months old
- SL on Mavic Open Pro with CycleOps head unit and HR strap - would need to be a cadence/speed monitor and possibly an ANT+ updater if I want to use a Garmin later - done 10,000km
- SL+ on 88mm carbon wheel with CycleOps head unit - would likely buy a Garmin package (Cadence/Speed/HR) to go with it
I am looking to use the wheel to:
- Commute
- Train
- Recreational rides
- Racing
The carbon unit likely rules itself out - although the thought is that I could get it rebuilt into a regular hub and put an Open Pro or similar sturdy rim on the SL hub. This would be the most expensive option, but would ebay the head unit. Would also end up with a Garmin which I would prefer (able to fully log where I've been). The wheel is only 24 spokes however - a bit light on for my Clyde-ilishious frame (97kg).
Resale would be better for a higher spec unit I think - particularly over a brand new Elite+.
So - thinking at this stage is on the SL with Mavic rim or the carbon wheel with a view to swapping over the rim for racing.
Appreciate any thoughts or experience on the subject.
Thanks and regards
