10 miles one-way is a pretty long commute if you're new to it. DON'T GIVE UP! My first commute years ago was 5 miles and I was in excellent shape when I started, but it was still harder than I expected. If you stick with it you'll look back on these first commutes and wonder why you didn't do it sooner.
Well, the ride home wasn't very enjoyable. I made it about 4.5 miles before the crank arm for on of my pedals broke off. I had bought a Topeak Alien II Multi-tool to bring with me for this sort of thing, but it didn't have the right sized allen wrench on it for the bolt. The bike has less than 100 miles on it too, so I was pretty disappointed something like this would happen already. I had to catch a ride the rest of the way home on my first day of commuting
