I'd say that organized rides are easier than solo rides, though frankly I've never done a solo century. Food, support, and other cyclists to chase down and keep you motivated.

Every century I've done has a contingent of recumbents, mountain bikes, Y-bikes, and other Fredmobiles. So you've got to be pretty slow to be in the back.

i've only done one organized century and I was in the slow group. We finished in 5 hours 30 minutes as the slow group and nobody on recumbents, y-bikes, or mountain bikes attempted the century, just the shorter rides. Of the 800or so registered riders, only about 100 signed up for the full century and most backed out when they hit the strong head winds. the rest did the 62 and 25 mile ride. If you're used to riding a century at your own pace, it might catch you off guard when the group decides to keep going when you feel like you need a break.
