MTB cleat issue

I've been having some problems with my left shoe and pedal. There seems to be some vertical play, and i can feel it when i unweight my foot on the upstroke. Anyone have any idea why?

Here are some photos of the cleats:

The pedals, a set of wellgo W44s, are currently being used on my road bike.

I don't think its a wear issue, the play has been there since i bought the pedals and shoes.

Could it have something to do with the screws? It seems the screws on the left shoe are almost flush with the plate, but not the right shoe. I used approximately the same torque on both shoes.

Or is it something else?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Teo
