First Bike Commute of My Life Today!

A couple of weeks ago, I posted a note about my new job working on a town concert series. It turns out that before the shows actually begin, I need to report everyday to a town park that's a 12-minute bicycle ride from my house. This has given me the opportunity to live out a lifelong dream of commuting to work by bicycle.

All I can say is that my first ride this morning was a pleasure. I started out at 6:45am, just a short while before the cars hit the road. 'Took the back road that brings me by a 100-year-old convent and orphanage, an old farm that dates back to the 1600s, a duck pond, and a sprawling golf course built on an old Gatsby Era estate. I've ridden this route hundreds of times before, but today, it felt super special and looked more awesome than ever.

When I got to the park (about an hour earlier than I needed to be), I was so full of energy that I just kept on riding. The highlight for me was a little bitty rolling bike path that I used to zip through on my Schwinn Orange Crate when I was a kid in the 60s and 70s.

Best of all, my work clothing didn't get too badly crunched in my pannier, and changing was a breeze. Needless to say, I had an entire community park in which to safely store my bike. I chose the old stable in which I ran my bicycle recycling program from 1997 to 2003. This was one frigging nostalgic day.

Anyway, while I realize that commuting to work out here in the suburbs is nowhere near as admirable and exhilarating as riding over the Brooklyn Bridge every morning and braving New York City traffic to get to work, I'd like to officially declare myself a bicycle commuter (for the next month, at least) and say that I'm proud to be one of yooz guys.
