The problem I had with both of my male offspring is that they knew that grade school and middle school grades don't mean anything in the US. They are both high IQ guys and were both horrible slackers in K through 8th Grade. Heck, my grade school report cards look like a guy headed for dropping out of high school and now I'm a college prof.

The problems arise when in 9th Grade they need to do what is required to get good grades. At that point they have no ass-kissing skills developed in middle school and they don't have the study skills to make the ass-kissing skills not needed.

I hear that girls are different, but I wouldn't know.
