I think the law of "planned obsolesence" will be coming into play. Shimano and Campy have to continue upgrading their stuff -- otherwise, consumers won't have any desire to keep upgrading (read: $$$). Whether the "next generation" will take the form of 11-speed cassettes and even thinner chains is debatable; whether or not drivetrains of the future will have more gears / options is not.
