no, chrome plating is entirely different from bare cromoly steel.
You absolutely cannot leave steel with just a coating of clear as it is inadequate at keeping the bare steel underneath from rusting.
you can't clear coat chrome either, since it will come out very cloudy.
bare steel needs a protective coating like an oil or paint or plating.
