There is a large motorcycle rally here this week. It's interesting to see the differences in clothing equipment on different types of bikes. The Harley guys wear $1000 worth of leather covering their entire bodies, but wear a handkerchief on their heads. The sportbike guys wear $600 helmets, but ride in shorts and T shirts.
I always wear a helmet on my motorcycle or bike, but would never insist that someone else does. That "we are paying for their care" statement just doesn't hold up. We pay for lots of care for people who make personal choices, no helmet injuries are far down on that list. JMO.
+1 I always wear a helmet, but I don't need the government to tell me to wear one. Ditto seat belts. If you are concerned with shouldering medical costs for other people's mistakes, start with drunk drivers. Lets see, that's almost half the fatalities on the road. Motorcyclists and bicyclists without helmets are way down the list.
