All is well. It WAS the stupid wedge after all. I got another wedge from another stem, ran the bolt through, and with only a little resistance, it spun through and repaired the threads on the bolt. I installed the wedge and bolt onto the stem, and it tightened normally. The difference in the threads was night and day on the two wedges. The one that was on it, wobbled loosely. The one I put on, had not even a hint of movement. My theory is that the threads were so large on on the wedge, that it pulled the very tops of the bolt threads off, leaving the majority of them intact. Once I ran the bolt through the "new" wedge, there was no perceptible difference in diameter. As tight as I was able to get it, I am confident it will hold. The original wedge goes out with the trash tomorrow morning.,,,,BD
