yes, exploding batteries is a concern. There are various circuits for supercaps that will keep the cap charges without exploding. Battery chargers are somewhat more problematic.
As far as your original question goes, you probably would be happy with the light on the road with only the bridge. However, if you only go walking pace a lot, you will need a voltage doubler, which is more than just a cap.
So you're saying that I shouldn't use the battery pack just wire the rectifier in and call it good? How much more complicated would it be to add the battery pack and whatever else I need to keep it from exploding?
Mr. IGH: I will have double check and see if I had the hub going to the right leads on the rectifier. It's very possible that I had it wrong
