The $30-40 KMC x-10 chain is more durable than higher end chains, and shifts well, it just weighs a little more. They designed it with durability in mind, so the outer links have thicker parts in the shape of an x, thus the name. It's supposed to resist stretching.
Good point about the ultra LOW END stuff. But I don't even know if you can find a cheap off brand 10 spd cassette. Middle of the line is usually best all around value.
Sounds like I'd be better off sticking with the old cassette then. I got the PC-1090R SRAM chain (I think). Did I overspend?
Overspending is all relative to your wallet. It's more to do with function. You say you just use the bike to commute and ride, not race or anything. I am sure the extra 30 dollars for a slightly lighter chain was not needed, but it is still an upgrade and it's certainly a nicer chain because of it.
