Singlespeed Conversion (re: Potential Front and Back Sprocket Conflicts)

I'm working on converting an old Schwinn Continental into a singlespeed for bike polo. To do this as cheaply as possible, I'm using an extra 27in wheelset I have from another old 10 speed, and I had the 17t sprocket from the 10 speed welded onto its freewheel. I'm trying to find a 28t chainwheel that can work with this, which seems pretty difficult (my LBS is looking into it too), but I'm still wondering how successful this can be. I'm not sure the LBS understands what I have going on with the back sprocket. Are there going to be issues with sprocket width difference? Is the back sprocket going to wear super quickly since it is so thin? Are there any other issues I don't understand?

Thanks!
