got a new toy!

2008 trek equinox 7, got it for 1100 as a leftover at the lbs. last summer i sold my road bike that was full dura ace, mavic ksyrium rims, weighed at 16 pounds with pedals. I've put 200 miles on the equinox in the past 2 weeks and my average speed is 18.9 mph. I usually do around 40 mile rides due to time restrictions. Fairly flat, but windy as all heck! the weird thing is, my average has only dropped 1 mph on my rides, and thats after taking off an entire year of cycling. I don't plan on keeping the trek stock at all. I'm gonna do an olympic tri on august 8th, after I finish(praying that the run doesn't kill me) I will reward myself with zipp 606 setup(i think) or something of that nature. i'm thinking by the 8th, i'll have around 1000 more miles under my legs and my average should go back up dramatically. I'm just wondering if I haven't lost much fitness in the year, or the tri bike just that fast? I was reading up on the trek and the reviews were saying the wheels were boat anchors. The bike is around 22 pounds ready to ride, not light by any means. you guys think the zipps will help my bike leg out? I've been a swimmer my whole life, cycled for 3 years which totaled 9,000 miles(until last year), and now have really been focusing on the run portion. So what does everyone think? get rid of the wheels that weigh almost 3000 grams with wheels? and what does everyone think i should get?
