it wasnt interfering with the axle, that can only happen if you have a bent axle. i thought it maybe had defective threads and was tightened too far, but it turned out to be just a cheapo freewheel.
i found another thread here http://www.bikeforums.net/archive/in.../t-436916.html that described the same noise i was hearing.
