my bet is that if you have twist shifters, it is most likely an 8 speed cassette. You do not need to spend a ton of money on XT shifters, you can get Acera shifters for a fraction of the price and they will most likely be more than enough for you. If you have a SRAM derailleur, go for X4's should do the trick. THere are really not that many options for 8 speed mountain shifters because most high end stuff is 9 speed and the 2011 SRAM stuff is all 10s
+1 The cost of those shifters is out of sight. Assuming you are 8 speed Shimano, I would move down a few notches. Acera shifter sets go for about $34 on Niagara.
+1 I really can't stand twist grip shifters. I tend to dump them early on any keeper MTBs.
