The use of soldering flux is the secret. It makes the lead/silver solder flow onto the metals being soldered together.
For something simple like that I would just use rosin core solder, much simpler and works just as well for stuff like that. If you're soldering some tiny 32 pin surface mount, then I would recommend some solder to clean the surfaces, but other than that, not really worth it.
