Used 9-speed or new 2x speed bike for 60 mile charity ride?

Hello,

Getting a new road bike to train for a 60 mile charity ride in September. Don't want to spend tons of money, so will either be buying a new entry-level 20-something speed road bike from a shop in SF for around $7-800, or a used one from Craigslist. I had a road bike before and never used more than 4 gears, however I usually steered clear from big hills.

I've found a bike on CL that I think looks good with good components, but wanted to get some insight on whether its 9 gears will be enough for our ride. There are a few 6-7% grades. Currently, I ride a fixed gear in SF so am more interested in a 9-speed with fewer gears and less weight, however, I also don't want to kill myself on this ride. Here's a link to the bike, please let me know any thoughts you might have. Also, if the price on this KHS is good. http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/bik/1811167159.html

Thanks SO much in advance!
