What kind of bars are you using? Assuming flat bars, maybe you could try a butterfly bar (this sounds like it would help your comfort problems...)

If drops, then a steertube extender plus a shorter stem could bring the bars back a bit.

Incidently, if it were me, I would use the BBB extender, it looks like a good design, but make sure the inner diameter of your steertube is the same diameter on the package...
