You can use a telephoto lens (usually works best with this too) that has an extremely low aperture opening time (I think that is it--the shutter won't be open very long at all). This allows the camera only to focus on the largest, closest image in the scene, and this will cause the background to be unfocused and "blurred". Its a great effect for fast moving sports though. The pics look great crosscut!!
