I know chain cleaning/lube discussions are really like religious wars, but I am beginning to suspect that over-cleaning of chains contributes more to wear than leaving it a bit gunked up.
This seems particularly true if said "over-cleaning" involves removing every bit of existing lube with aggressive solvents, and then trying to replace it with weak-sauce motor oil. I mean, really, how effective is a 3:1 mix of solvent:motor oil? How much lube is going to stick to something (you know, like bearing surfaces), when it starts out covered in solvent?
Sounds just like 3:1 mix of "solvent:solvent" to me, leaving a very clean, but unlubricated chain. Ever seen just how little solvent it takes to clean up hands covered in grease?
Just sayin'...
