A man who rammed a bicyclist with his pickup Monday in West Bloomfield was arrested for felonious assault.
West Bloomfield police received a call at 7:09 p.m. about a road rage incident at Inkster and Maple roads.
Police said a 61-year-old West Bloomfield man had been driving a pickup northbound on Inkster Road when he passed a 42-year-old Franklin man on a bicycle.
When the two stopped for the light at Inkster and Maple roads, the bicyclist came up to the pickup driver’s window and told the driver he had crowded him on the road.
“The two exchanged words,” said Lt. Carl Fuhs of the West Bloomfield police.
Fuhs said the bicyclist struck the pickup truck’s mirror with a water bottle, and the bottle fell to the ground. The mirror wasn’t broken.
“He was off the bike walking (with it) to get the water bottle and went in front of the truck,” said Fuhs. “The pickup drove forward, ramming the bicycle. Then the driver backed up and rammed it again.”
During this time, the bicyclist was pinned under the bike and under a car that was in front of him.
Fuhs said witnesses at the scene confirmed the information.
The bicyclist complained to police about pain in his ankle and he was transported to a local hospital where it was found he had a broken ankle, police said.
Police said the bike wasn’t damaged.
The pickup driver was arrested for felonious assault and the truck was impounded, police said.
The driver was released pending issuance of a warrant, said Fuhs.
