Mainly because it's the "big event" month in France, which most likely brings in a lot of new members, that on top of having to deal with all the regular BF numskulls. No doubt that is why the shorts thread vanished - not wanting to leave a bad impression for all the newcomers. Few things are more uncomfortable than having to look at the backside of a cyclist.
