The secret is to not ride fru-fru fairy/pixie wheels with low spoke counts.

Seriously? The secret is to only loosen spokes to true, almost never tighten. When I'm building wheels, I tighten all the spokes, then loosen problem ones until it's true. Lather, rinse, repeat until you get to your desired tension.
