2. The fourth chain ring ---- How many years have we been living with only three chain rings? It must be less than 40 years but it seems like forever. I can't understand why we are only adding sprockets to the rear wheel but avoid adding more chain rings? We are now up to 11 cogs on the back of the rear wheel. It's time we started putting more up front and I want to see this with touring bikes.
this has been done many times but doesnt catch on. the ones ive seen use adapters that bolt to the granny gear and accept a cog. they even show up on the classic and vintage forum from time to time. here is a modern one:
