Citation to where they got it?
These guys were falling over a distance of nearly 1k. Are they claiming that a single motorcycle equipped with huge engine guards, going down, splashes oil over a distance of 1k? Not very credible. I doubt the motorcycle lost any oil at all. (That's why they use adventure bikes, folks. They are pretty heavily armoured.)
More likely, since that stretch of road ran under the driplines of trees, you had some slippery sap or leaves on the road. (The road is wet, Lance. Time to be careful!)
There are a lot of riders saying NOT that there was oil on the road, but, "The TdF doesn't belong in the north countries." They don't like cobbles. They don't like wet road descents that run under the drip lines of trees.
