Hope your friends make a full and speedy recovery. This is definitely my greatest fear as I travel along a pretty busy road/hwy during my rides. Yesterday when I rode my partner actually rode on the sidewalk along the busiest part of the road where there was no bike lane. I thought it weird, but reading stories like this make me want to reconsider and take the sidewalk more often in the absence of a dedicated bike lane.
