Would you rather have had the typical first week flat stage, doomed break caught at 2 km, with a field sprint? We'll have plenty of those.

This ended up being a great stage, adding a new dimension to the TDF. Does add a bit of randomness and luck, but definitely more interesting than another flat stage.
