I'll admit that LA is going to have a tough time making up 50 seconds on Contador on any stage and today's bad luck was... well, bad, but a lot can happen. This race is 3 weeks long.
Also, today's stage likely took a bit out of Armstrong. A 3 week race is a lot about conserving energy. In Armstrong's winning bids, he almost always had great team support, and did very little work. Efforts like today when he was forced to chase solo tend to add up particularly when you're 38.
Perhaps a small point, but it certainly didn't help his overall chances.
