I find it interesting that people are arguing that this attitude never existed. We have the OP, me, and a couple of others saying that it did. Were the people insisting that it didn't actually involved in cycling in the '70s?

All the big names I've seen listed as riding Schwinns were sponsored by Schwinn. Anyone would have ridden one under those circumstances. There was nothing wrong with the bikes and they were cheap.
