ideally i'd want to get a 170mm or 167.5mm crank and shorter clips and no toe overlap. i've seen the half clips and they don't look very secure. i hope what i'm asking isn't unreasonable

Toe overlap isn't really a problem.
Half clips arn't really foot retention
