The Tour used to award a Red Jersey for the most aggressive rider. It may have been referred to as "combative", or perhaps that was a bad translation?
I Googled Gerrit Solleveld*, and came up with this image:
Further digging uncovered
this article which referred to the red jersey as being awarded for the intermediate sprints.
This article claims that the Red Jersey was awarded from 1984 - 1989, but phased out because it was considered redundant with the Green Jersey. I had also heard that the award presentation was taking too long because of all the different jerseys, so some were discontinued. Even the White Jersey for the best young rider was temporarily discontinued from about 1989 to 2000.
The Tour also used to award the Combination Jersey, for the rider who had the highest over all ranking in all of the other categories. That must have been a nightmare to keep track of all the different point totals - no wonder that jersey is no longer awarded! Any way, here's a picture from 1986 of Bernard Hinault in that jersey, and you can clearly see the red section:
*It's truly scary that I had to take Organic Chemistry three times before I passed, yet I remember things like Gerrit Solleveld's name almost 25 years later!
