I'm currently riding a Scattante road bike that was built up by the previous owner. I'm well aware that it's not the best choice for a commuter (though not the worst either).
If I was only going to ride the 3-mile route every day I'd go for a single-speed (can't get much more reliable than that, right?).
There aren't too many bikes that wouldn't work for this. Pick something you like. If it was me, I'd get something used that you could put a rack and fenders on. Personally I like gears, but whatever. What's your budget? Does your current frame have braze-ons for racks and fenders? Bar end shifter would be a good way to go if the brifter replacement is too pricey.
