If I'm heading into the wind the difference between on the tops and in the drops is significant. Getting lower is definitely more aero.

The saddle-bar drop isn't the aesthetic issue for me, it's the amount of stem and seatpost showing. If you imagine the frame in my pic above being a 61 rather than a 58 for the saddle and bars to be in the same places they are in that pic both seatpost and stem would have to lower relative to the BB. While the seatpost would still be within my aesthetic sensibilities the stem would be getting close to slammed IMHO.
