I do it because I'm use to it and, besides, it looks cooler than handlebars high enough to do pull ups.

Seriously, there is a significant gain in speed going from the hoods to the drops -- about 5%. The aerodynamic effect is even greater when riding into a strong wind.

My road bikes are set up with a 4-5" drop and my cyclocross bikes with a 3" drop.

Keep in mind that body dimensions differ greatly. Leg length = saddle height. Body length = top tube length. Arm length = stem length and bar drop.
