I have $500 to upgrade my 2008 Schwinn Circuit: what do you suggest?

Hello. I primarily use my bike (2008 Schwinn Circuit) for commuting but I love going on 15- to 30-mile rides on the weekends. I want to make a couple upgrades to make it more comfortable for the longer rides--so I can ride even farther--and to improve my pedaling efficiency. I know $500 doesn't necessarily buy a lot in the world of road bikes but since I'm not a triathlete or incredibly hardcore I don't think I need incredibly expensive parts, necessarily. That said I'd rather buy one or two nice upgrades than several not-so-hot parts, and the $500 is a guideline, not a hard limit. The current pedals, chain and bar tape aren't stock but everything else is. The chain is an SRAM powerlink chain and the pedals are some cheapo Wellgo cage pedals.

The primary things I think I'd like to replace are the saddle and the pedals. I'd love to go clipless but I've never ridden that way before so I don't know exactly what to seek in the cleats and shoes. I'd like to avoid Shimano if possible (only because they are such a big company, nothing personal) and I really want them to be weighted properly so they sit right-side-up. These Time Iclics appeal because it sounds like they're easier to escape when necessary. I'll also need to buy the shoes, and I don't know what I need to know to pick a good pair that's compatible with the pedals.

As far as saddles go I don't know much about them. I'm a fairly thin guy with a bony butt and this is the primary source of discomfort on my rides. I'm using the stock saddle (yikes) at the moment. What brands/styles might fit me well?

Of course, any other upgrades you suggest I'll appreciate!
