Presumably it could be done, but anyone that's serious enough rider, to likely be strong enough to pull it off, would have toe clips.

Also, I think it would be just a bit dangerous. You wouldn't want your foot coming off the pedal in a high cadence effort sprinting, or matching an acceleration
this. you especially shouldn't do it if the road is wet b/c there will be little traction holding your shoes to the pedals.

i entered a race as a collegiate D. there was an idiot from uconn who entered with just platforms. i made sure to stay the hell away from him, given there was a fast downhill on which you can hit 40mph, and the road was wet. sure enough three laps into the circuit race, the guy crashed & went over the railings. fortunately, the drop was not very high, and i think he landed on soft grass. point is, you don't want to be that idiot.
