Basically a bunch of punks between 14-16 think its cool to attack males walking alone. It has been going on for quite a while now. I have heard about some attacks on the bike path at night as well. Most of the attackers have been from Kenwood Academy (5015 South Blackstone). Lately this has become the cool thing to do for these punks. People say that the attacks have been dying down though. I would still keep an eye out.
Most interesting from the article:
The alderwoman--who is quite good, actually--expressing surprise, how it's always been such a protected area. Enclaves are ripe for this kind of assault.
More interesting is the U of C community relations director, believing that pepper spray is intended as a deterrent of some sort (I can't imagine any circumstance where deterrence would be operative), and counseling against using spray on the grounds that it would make the already-violent attackers "angry":
Richardson suggested that students switch directions if they feel uneasy, or carry a whistle, which the UCPD provides for $1.50. He advised against Mace and pepper spray, saying that these supposed deterrents often anger attackers.
If you don't spray, then they'll only permanently cripple you rather than striking in anger?
As if.
