Probably - it depends on how much room there is for adjustment on your setup, and where your axle is currently. Plan on adding another link or two, though.
Let me be clear that I really liked how 48/19 felt, I just hated how it looked. After putting about 2000 miles on it with that setup, I had a 2 day adventure planned that involved riding back-to-back centuries, so I swapped the rear to a 16. I liked it fine for the summer and fall. Then winter came and I got fat and out of shape and in the spring I found I couldn't push that gear anymore and I had to take days off here and there because my knees were hurting.
I'm at 44/16 now, and looking forward to putting a 17T on the bike and spinning out more.
