In appreciation of good motorists
I've been getting depressed reading all the car-bike conflict horror stories on here. I just thought I'd mention that a majority of the drivers where I live, in Hanover County, Virginia, are respectful and careful about passing and yielding to bicycles. Maybe the bike culture here is advanced, I don't know; there are an awful lot of riders out there, especially on the weekends. But it's usually only one out of about fifty cars that I have any kind of issue with, whether it's honking, passing too closely, whatever. Most around here, especially out on the back roads, seem to pass with care. I've had cars & pickup trucks follow me for as much as a half mile when the road was winding or narrow to wait for a good opportunity to pass. I try to give them a wave or a thumbs up when it seems like they're being respectful. Of course, that one bad driver out of fifty is enough to ruin your day or get you killed, but it seems we often forget about or ignore the ones who get it right.
