And unless your are riding in place of driving, I don't see how riding is being "eco-concious" in the sense that it is conserving resources.

Earlier this week I was reading a post somehwere about a guy whose long tour was interrupted by chaffing that led to an infection that led to an absess that had to be drained in a hospital. As others have noted, the sink or shower can suffice. And you shouldn't be putting them in the dryer anyway if you want them to last.
