Some devices might increase attention span over longer drives. That is, most driving is boring. Having some music or whatever might actually improve performance by keeping drivers alert for mundane driving.
As long as a motorist is not paying more attention to the car entertainment controls than what's on the road.
I still keep thinking about this particular car insurance tv commercial, where it starts out looking through a car window, at an empty interior, it slowly pans back for most of the commercial to reveal what appears to be a car traveling on a freeway, at speed, without a driver at the wheel. In the very last few seconds of the commercial, the driver suddenly pops up from picking up a cd off the floor, wipes off the cd, and puts it in the cd player. The commercial's catch phrase is "We're here, because they're out there".
