The original Athena group was crap. I had the first Athena stuff, and it shifted terribly. No one including the Shimano rep could get it to work.

By the time it got to 8 speed, it might have gotten better, but I wouldn't bet on it.

The shifting/ braking on a modern bike with Ultegra will be noticeably better.


The orignal Athena group was also heavy. My bet is that there is about a 5 pound difference in the weight of those 2 bikes.
