Bikes: Too many bikes, too little time to ride

get a chainwhip and a lockring tool. tighten down your cog with the chainwhip. then tighten down the lockring with the lockring tool. putting pressure on the cranks when you have a loose cog/lockring will result in slip (which it seems like you're experiencing), or worse, stripped threads.
