I read about how the 85% number is probably not true
But, my own experience of cracking my head - err - helmet - on a rock tells me helmets are definitely worth it. (Along with countless other stories)
It also showed me just how little control you have over what your head does when falling, I was amazed.
No control whatsoever - when I landed on my shoulder, having my head follow, sideways-whiplash-style, right onto a rock with a lot of force, enough to break the helmet in 2.
