Dia-Compe 287V cable guide - did you use it?

The 287V brake handles come with a short section of aluminium tube with plastic lining, and a wider end ferrule holder.

I found it really hard to position them correctly, and they seemed to increase friction even when in position. In the end, I decided not to use them.

Anyone else with experience from installing/using this specific brake handle.
Did you use the guides or not, and why?

Do you think I should give it another try?
I have friction issues, and I think it might have to do with the cable ends at the handles not sitting flat against the brake handle body where the cable enters.
