Before I was under the impression that I needed to keep heavier pressure on the pedels to gain in speed, but keeping a faster cadence has actually helped me pick up my overall avarage speed. I'm not talking by just a little bit either it has really started jumping.
A cadence of 90 is plenty good for getting in shape, the goal is to use the bike's gearing to get your heart rate up, and not fatigue your legs. Your legs will naturally get stronger as your heart gets in shape, and you'll lose weight faster. Track racers will sprint up to 150+ RPM, but that's extremely hard to maintain. I'd use your target heart rate and leg fatigue as an indicator of whether you need to increase or decrease your cadence.

Almost forgot, yes, I rode today! Did about 13.5 miles, down highway 20 through the swamp. Saw at least 3 dead raccoons, heard several alligators as I rode. Got helping drafts from a few 18-wheelers, and got to watch the sunrise throw sunbeams through the mossy cypress trees... was a very nice ride. One of these days, I'm going to spend the weekend going down Hwy. 20 with a big broom and sweep up all the debris on the shoulders. I didn't have time to get my camera set up, so I'll get more pics the rest of the week, as I took the rest of the week off of work.
