One reason why I find mountain biking (i.e. off city streets) more and more my cup of tea. I am trying to find a way to train for a century (Cool Breeze) by doing just offroad and bike trails but its hard to do!
I understand how you feel. I think at one time many cyclist think, "I just want to ride on paths away from traffic." That's why one of my favorite rides in up in Mt. Hollywood in Griffith Park. But I'm not only a recreational cyclist, I'm also a utility cyclist and plan to be a commuting cyclist. So I have to ride on the LA streets.
Good luck on the Cool Breeze.
