I believe you may be right I did suspect as much from the start, but I was hoping there might be some magic bike out there that would do everything!

Yeah... I was looking at those because really, I don't need a bike that folds. I'm getting by pretty well with my big heavy non-folding hybrid; I just thought that a folder might be a bit nicer if/when I want to travel with it on public transport. I'm getting the impression, though, that a 26" folding bike might not actually be any easier to handle, and if I want to go that route, I may as well get one that does it properly!

You're right again there - I should focus on what I will actually use it for, not what I'd like do to but probably won't as often Especially if it's possible to rent mountain bikes... My image of hire bikes is always clunky old shopper types; I guess I'm a bit behind the times!

Thanks for the tip; I'll pay them a visit next time I have a free weekend. It looks like they have Dahons and Bike Fridays, which are probably my top two right now.
